Wildflowers of the Berkshires:  Where and When They Bloom

is an ideal guide for finding wildflowers in the Berkshires

The Introduction describes ways to use the book, how the author gathered information, and observations she made during her hikes.  Explanations are provided about leaf arrangements and the shapes of flowers and leaves to help the reader identify flowers along the trails.  Travel directions are provided to each of the areas as well as information about hours of operation, parking and comfort facilities, and fees.  Trail information includes description of terrain and level of difficulty, trail length and minimum hiking time.

The Main Text section lists the wildflowers blooming during the first two weeks and last two weeks of each month during the growing season of April through October.  Flowers observed on each of the trails at each location are listed.  Annotations are provided for additional information as needed.  These include indications of the quantity of flowers observed at a location, any unusual colors, or whether flowers were beginning to bloom or were at the end of blooming.

Scientific Name cross referencing is provided by two lists.  One is an alphabetical listing of scientific names with their common name equivalents.  The second is an alphabetical listing of common names with their scientific name equivalents.

The Index lists each occurrence of every flower listed in the text and photographic portions of the book.

Over 150 color photographs are provided in each volume to aid in flower identification.  Each was taken by the author during her hikes.

This guide is published as Vol. 1 and Vol. 2, but each volume is an independent book.  The only difference is the wildflower locations documented.

Wildflowers and Waterfalls of Western New England and Eastern New York

for those outside the Berkshires who wish to find wildflowers or waterfalls

This guide follows the same format as Wildflowers of the Berkshires.  The Introduction includes information on leaf arrangement and flower shapes as an aid in flower identification. It also discusses the wildflower photographs found in the center of the book and how to use the size indicators listed with each flower to determine its relative size.  The author also discusses how she developed her wildflower lists, information on early and late seasons, and conditions that may vary from year to year and affect wildflower growth.  Background information is also provided on waterfalls and how to photograph them.

After the Introduction, the reader will find Driving Directions, What to Expect, and Trail Information.  This section is divided by state.  An outline state map appears on the first page of each section showing the locations of all wildflower and waterfall areas the author visited in that state.

Driving Directions to each area are provided from two or more directions.

What to Expect describes facility information such as hours of operation, comfort facilities, parking, and fees if applicable.

Trail Information includes description of terrain and level of difficulty, and trail length or approximate hiking time.

The Wildflowers in Bloom section is divided by state.  Within each state, the lists show wildflowers in bloom each month during the growing season of April through October.  Annotations were provided for additional information such as the quantity of flowers observed, unusual colors, or whether the flowers were beginning to bloom or were near the end of blooming.  In many cases, the wildflower listings are trails to the waterfalls covered in this guide.

The Scientific Name section provides cross referencing by two lists.  One is an alphabetical listing of scientific names with their common name equivalents.  The second is an alphabetical listing of common names with their scientific name equivalents.

The Index lists each occurrence of every flower and waterfall listed in the text and photographic portions of the book.

Over 200 color photographs of wildflowers taken by the author are included as an aid in flower identification.  A size reference is included with each picture to indicate the flower's size.  A photograph of each of the 20 waterfalls is included in the center of the book following the wildflower photographs.  Each of the wildflower and waterfall photographs is numbered and is listed in the index.
